Hands are the part of the body we learn to use before any other. They are the first instrument of knowledge of reality after the eyes. I often find myself drawing hands: hands on their own, hands full of colour, hands that intertwine, hands apart one from the other. From something physical and recognisable to something symbolic and sometimes metaphysical: often the step is short and their recognisability always infallible. A hand is always a hand and is one of the strongest symbols of humanity: it welcomes, rejects, expresses strength and sometimes violence. It can be alone and always be interpreted and understood as something profoundly human.
