If you stroll along Brooklyn Heights (on the opposite side of Little Island) you will encounter several regularly shaped man-made platforms or islands occupied by small parks or playgrounds.

This work by Heatherwick is inspired by the geometries of ice sheets breaking up as they thaw in late winter, even as they resemble large concrete flowers surfacing from the Hudson River.

This is the image you see as you approach it, although numerous of these flowers surface within the park, which has a rather rough morphology.

Walking through it, one can do nothing but follow the marked paths or pause at the café or look at the view, which is in any case remarkable on all sides.

This artificial island fits perfectly into the poetics of Heatherwick, who has always been attracted to organic forms, whether or not they have anything to do with the context. Unlike other similar islands in Manhattan or Brooklyn, this one can also be visited from below, where it reveals its sculptural structure.
